Saturday 28th April was a date that the Old Caterhamians 2nd XV were counting down to for a number of weeks, as it was the last game of the season, and it was the League Cup final. With qualification secured, Old Cats faced Purley John Fisher RFC, which in itself is a rivalry match, adding to the excitement and nerves of the players. The game was played at a neutral ground in Esher, and it was fast paced and extremely physical, with both teams showing what they can do, on and off the ball. A few first half tries saw the momentum swing in Old Cats favour, and PJF failed to respond with any comeback points besides a solitary 5 points. The final score was 27-5 and Old Cats came away with some silverware to put the cherry on top of a magnificent season. The man of the match was Old Cats Right winger James Saunders, who was one of many who had outstanding performances. Congratulations must also go to Paul Hadley and Luke Hadley, a Father – Son front row combination who were both awarded Player of the Season. A great achievement for the Hadley Household. The 2nd Team also say goodbye to Sam Stanley who steps down as Head Coach this year, who has been the architect to this team’s success in recent years, and someone who has left a big impact of the young academy players who will be stepping up to senior rugby.
The weekend’s success was only half done by this stage however, with the Ladies XV defeating Harpenden Ladies on the Sunday. This was a nail-biter with the final score being 32-27 to the Old Cats Ladies. This was the clubs final game and was a fantastic way to finish the season for everyone involved. This was also the last game that Chairman George Williams would be Chairman for after 3 years of extraordinary service to the Club. The club thank George for everything he has done from helping the Juniors, right up to the 1st XV. A great asset to the club, who’s shoes will most certainly be very hard to fill.
